Children

First United Methodist Church is committed to providing quality faith development opportunities serving children and their families. We are a Safe Sanctuaries church which means that all of our paid and volunteer adults working with children have passed a stringent background screening. Also, we have specific measures in place to ensure that all children are safe while on the church campus. For more information http://www.umcdiscipleship.org/leadership-resources/safe-sanctuaries)

Growing in Faith

Breakfast and Bible Stories

From September – June, Sunday mornings begin at 8:50 am on the Colorado Blvd patio and in the Chapel with a healthy breakfast and a family-friendly casual worship experience led by the children. The children join their Sunday school teachers at 9:30 am for class and are brought as a group to the Sanctuary for the 10 a.m. service. Infant, toddler and preschool care continues through the worship hour.

Tuesday Night Food & Faith

Throughout the year, 2 – 6 week classes are offered for children on Tuesday nights from 6:30 – 8 p.m. Beginning with a light supper, these programs include Bible study, mission projects, arts & crafts, science, and drama.

One-Room Sunday School

In July and August, we offer a special Sunday school program for children going into K-6th grade that meets at 10:15 am, following the Time for Young Christians in worship.

Summer Vacation Bible School

For a week each summer, 3 years olds through 6th grade children gather for joyful learning about God’s love for them and the world. Staffed with youth and adult volunteers, this popular program is open to children from the church and wider community. Using song, prayer, scripture, service, crafts, and recreation, children and leaders together celebrate growing in faith!

Outdoor Camps

In January, the Children’s Ministry team schedules a weekend camp for children in grades 1-6 and their families at Camp Sky Meadows in the San Bernardino Mountains. There are two all-church camps every year (Memorial and Labor Day weekends). These are a great time to have an intergenerational experience of God’s creation.

Worship & Music

Throughout the year, periodic family worship services are held as part of the main 10 a.m. worship experience, which include the opportunity for children to offer leadership through drama, music and reading, as well as to experience Holy Communion with the congregation.

Kindergarten through 6th grade children participate in the Time for Young Christians in the main worship service each week and then are dismissed to participate in the children’s music program, which ends at 11:15 a.m. [Learn more about the church’s music program here]. Parents have time gather their children at the end of worship.

Developing Generous Hearts & Lives

Helping children learn the importance of serving and reaching out to others in need is a key value at First UMC. Examples include a focus on Habitat for Humanity each fall and in the spring we focus on the Heifer Project. Children also help collect food for the Social Service ministry at the church and participate in occasional projects throughout the year.
