Our theme for the season of Lent this year is “Got Soul?” We’ll explore the spiritual disciplines of fasting, prayer, daily bible reading, serving our neighbor, corporate worship, and testimonials and love feasts as ways in which we sustain a daily walk of faithful living.

Every year the lectionary readings for Ash Wednesday are the same: Joel 2:1-2, 12-17; Psalm51:1-17; 2 Corinthians 5:20b-6:10; and Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21.  We will have three opportunities for corporate prayer this day. Everyone is encouraged to attend one or more of these gatherings in the Chapel:

  • 30 minute prayer services with the Imposition of Ashes at 7:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.
  • 7:00 p.m. Service of Reflection, Imposition of Ashes and Holy Communion. Ken Chikonzo, our Fuller Seminary intern, will bring the evening meditation.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday which is traditionally a day of reflection, prayer, and fasting. In the late 20th century, many United Methodist congregations also returned to the ancient ritual of the Imposition of Ashes on this day. The ashes are made from the palm branches used in the previous year’s Palm Sunday celebration. They remind us how easy it is to go from celebrating to forgetting our relationship with Jesus. The ashes also indicate our mortality and the fragility of life. They are an outward sign of the need for an inward renewal.Lent is a time to renew our faith, deepening our life of prayer and devotion. Ash Wednesday is agood day to begin.
